    Hi

Dont forget the duty you will have to pay - If you contact HMCE they will be able to tell you percentage it will be.

    Dear David,

One piece of advice is to make absolutely sure that your overseas supplier puts the shipping charges on the customs documents together with the item value.

I recently bought about £50 of electronics from the US, and the supplier charged me 15 dollars for shipping. Fair enough. The problem was that the freight charges were not listed on the Customs documents. The net result was that the absolute animals at UK HMCE arbitrarily decided that the shipping costs would be £100 and charged VAT on that sum. BTW, do not even think of arguing with them. They lack all vestiges of humanity..
    Best wishes,

    Martin

thanks for the replies, very illuminating.

presumed that the duty would be 17.5% but obviously i need the properly investigate this.

    cheers

17.5% is the VAT, duty will be about 2-3%, but you will need to check.

Insurance Insurance Insurance! Make sure you have it insured- ask the courier for a quote- it'll cost, they usualy have different charges for different values, but it's well worth it when you open your crate and find that the nice chaps at the post office have been playing football with your goods!
I love deadlines- I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.
