Use laptops to save energy?

Just wondering....we are due to replace all of our computers. Currently the average computer is an AMD athlon64 3000 based or intel equivalent. They are used around 12/day, or more. Laptops seems to us much less power and seem plenty fast now. I'm looking at Intel centrino core2 duo 7500 based laptops. Does anyone know if I'm saving any energy at all by switching to the laptops? thanks. jim.

I,m using an Intel centrino core2 duo 7200, Inspiron 6400 ,15 inch lcd. Its hooked up to a kill a watt meter and the battery is charging.

It reads 1 amp , 68 watts and .95KWH. There is no dvd drive running which would use more and I'm just using internet. Don't know what a desk top uses but i'd say it would use a lot more than a laptop. Hope someone can give you a desktop comparison .

I would also like to see a comparison. I would assume the CRT monitors for a desktop would put them way above in power usage. There are other considerations though. Ergonomics, I like my monitor farther away from me than the laptop allows, gives me more use of my desk's real estate. I like the numeric keypad on my keyboard. I don't like the touch-pad mouse on a laptop. Laptops are easier to steal. PCs are easier/cheaper to repair.

I'd think twice about equiping your whole place with laptops. As a previous poster said- they are easier (dead easy, in fact) to steal add to this the fact that they are very easy to re- sell on and you will see them rapidly dissapear.

Not entirely sure about energy comparisons, but say you had to replace like two laptops a year due to theft and/ or repairs (you ever tried to repair one? it's a nightmare) energy cost savings go out the window.
