    what type of bits,

I think most people that finally gets there cnc mill, router engraver, or what have you built and make a few carvings or engravings gets to point of needing a good source of information what type of bits are used and where to buy them. I have a router mounted on mine like many other builders, that uses a 1/4 inch shank. The problem im having is finding a good selection of bit sizes for engraving and such smaller than 1/8 and that will pull the chips up from the work. what have you good people been using and where do you get them. these local lumber co. such as lowes, and home depot doesnt have a very good selection for engraving or very narrow bits.

Most of the commonly available small size bits in the US have a 1/8" diameter shank. How about making (or getting made) and adapter sleeve to fit in your 1/4" collet to take 1/8" shanks ??

    engraving bits

for engraving i use 2 main types of bits

    1) ball end mill (less burs created usually)

    2) combination drill, used mostly for lathe tail stock center holes. these are relatively cheap.

if you really cannot get different size collets make for example a simple bushing like 3/16 id to 1/4" od and put a saw cut length wise through it and debur. then when 1/4" collet tightens bushing closes up to grab smaller diameter bits.
    .
i would order bit online. it is usually cheaper to buy $100 at a time and have delivered than to buy one at a time from a big chain hardware store. some wood working supply stores have router bits up and down cutting flutes. but i would not use them for engraving usually. McMaster.com sells just about everything with normally fast delivery but normally they cost more. depends what's important to you

thank you guys for the replys, I will try to find a 1/4 to 1/8 collet reducer, and check out the website also, I will more than likely have to buy the collet somewhere. will do a search on internet. I think my next stage might be in trying to get a good hold down sys for the parts.
