Slandau,
Any of the (4) motors "spindle X Y or Z" may be locked up or jammed, check all of them.
On a separate note you may get more information if you post in Roland section of the Forum versus here.
Jeff...
does any know what it means when the Roland CNC mill MDX-500 displays this message when the machine is started? The head unit can move laterally by hand, so I know that it is not jammed. I removed to accordian fold screw cover, and there was very little debris in there, although it does sound and feel very smooth. Do I need to replace a motor or something?
Thanks.

Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.
Hi slandau, I'm having a similar problem on my MDX-500. Were you able to resolve the "motor lock" problem?
