CNC Router Build

Hi,

I'm a newbie to cnc, but I'm a long time prgrammer so I dont worry too much about programming a CNC machine but I'm a little daunted by building one from scratch..

My wife has some strong ideas for revamping our kitchen doors, and rather than paying (shedloads) to have them created, I wanted to do it myself using a CNC Router.

I'm in the UK and looking for someone who can build one for me (or act as a CNC Angel) to help while I build one.

Ive looked at kits, and figured:

1. You need to build a small machine to build a larger one.
2. Bigger machines are disproprtionately expensive for no good reason.

I'm quite practical, but not much experience in metal working, so happy to pay someone to build one for me, or for someone with a experience to be a "buddy", help with the machining - (I'm s**t at measuring square!)

Please, any offers gratefully received, thanks

Ian

Well, I don't know about in the UK but in the U.S.A. you can get some excellent deals on used cnc's. There is alot of guys on cnczone that build cnc router's and if you are seriously looking into buying one then I'd imagine you'll be looking at around $1500 +. That is for a eh so so machine, which probably won't work to do something of that size. Now you might find some dumb anus who will give you a offer to build 1 for cheap, but don't think that would be to wise to put your money into a pile of crap. I recommend since I know that you don't really have any experience in fabricating your own, you should look into machine auctions in your country. Even if you have to travel 1000 miles to get a good deal then you should do that. That will be no doubt your best bang for you buck. Thats how I came upon mine for a extremely sweet deal and I'm sure you can to if you look. Good luck.

I agree with CNC Junky. I am curious why someone would try to build their own when there is a surplus of used equipment for giveaway prices with this down economy. I don't know anything about routers. But on the CNC Mill side there are full sized CNC Mills in running condition for $1500 all over the place, but people are spending $3,000 to build their own toy sized bench models. It makes no sense to me, maybe people are doing it for the challenge and joy of building their own?

Hi Ian, I am based in the UK, Manchester area, have a Pacer 2500HD WoodRouter, if you need anything cutting please give me a call on 07807888346, I will work with you on the design of your own CNC Router, been in the wood industry for over forty years, you will have to work out the programing of your stepper motors, but wood and metal or OK, I have all types of welders, so give me a call if you think I can help.
Regards Ernie.

Hi Ernie

Do you still have the CNC Pacer 2500HD Router?
Can you tell me abit about this machine as I'm considering buying a second hand machine with similar name and model.
the seller of the 2500hd pacer uses the machine for his sign company and has used this router to cut various materials such as, acrylic, aluminium composite, MDF and Foam PVC.

He says the machine lacks a small air compressor that can be purchased cheaply.

Would you recommend this machine for cutting 3d shapes, and how would you rate this machine overall.

thanks
