RFQ - two-part support

Hi,

Thank you to everybody who responded to my last RFQ.

Currently, one of my students has designed a support for a small antenna project; it consists of 2 parts which should be relatively simple except for one feature on each part:

Part "outer" is the bigger (blue) box is approx. 3 x 5" and has a narrow, internal channel which is required by design to have 'square' corners -- i.e. as tight radius as possible. The dimensions of this channel are 0.148 x 0.074".

Part "inner" is the smaller (yellow) piece, fits inside, and is fastened to the "outer" piece. This has a feature of a 'rectangular' cut-out that is required to be with as square corners as possible. The dimensions of that cutout are also 0.148 x 0.074".

Do you guys suggest any techniques that can allow these to be made? Is anybody here interested in this project?

Many thanks and best regards,

/Dan

I would EDM the square corner pockets.
Expensive, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

How much does that add to a job (say in this case)?

Also, I have 3D files (IGES/DXF) if anybody is interested in looking at these, thank you!

Depends on the tolerance and surface finish needed.
If specs are reasonable maybe $300 CDN

Is this pricing for the entire part or were you just mentioning the EDM cost alone? In both cases, it's pretty steep ;-)

EDM work only.
$950 for the job depending on what "high precision center hole" means (if it needs to be more accurate than a Reamer double the price).

No it isn't.

This is also why I don't bother to quote anything here.

Interesting; that is good information - thank you!

Also please pardon my ignorance as I am not a mechanical engineer nor have an understanding of what milling or EDM work involves and the time/material/etc. consumed.

No problem - we all started at ground zero at some point in time

tolerances

if you request tolerances better than 0.001" means you are willing to pay big bucks. Question was why your student needs this tolerance. Most of the s.c. high tech parts do not need it.

Why does the channel have to have square corners? Is it acceptable to do something like the attached image?
