From what I know, not too great unless you are machining parts for medical or dental companies, everything else appears to be way down. I have a lot of machinist friends that work in other fields and their employers have all had massive lay-offs or cutting work hours. Said friends work in Los Angeles and Orange counties. All the local suppliers where I buy my metal, cutting tools and other supplies are struggling.

Yikes! You guys are dead? We have jobs in the paper in Ohio, if you have 20 years of experience in aerospace or mold and die manufacture, they will probably start you at $12-15/hr... It's a f'in joke! Pathetic! It is what it is I guess.

I left this trade 35 years ago to be a mechanic, made twice the money, and no math ! Now having retired ( I was tired yesterday and am tired again today ) I find myself working on a consultant basis for a machine shop in a test lab. The work is not too steady, but hell If I wanted to work full time I wouldn't have retired. That said, the recession, the governmental change, the stars, whatever it is, business has slowed significantly, even in the rocket / satellite industry.Oh, BTW as for the low paid jobs offered, I have found over the years, the advertised jobs and those offered through the employment offices of the state are and have always been like that. The good jobs are assigned through people networks, someone knows someone else, who needs a good . . . If you are looking for a job, you might enroll in the local junior college metal shop, employers often look there first, or put on some nice slacks and a sport coat and go out and meet shop owners print up some business cards, go introduce yourself, leave them a card, thank them for their time, and make a good impression. You might get that call a year from now, and it might be better than what you are doing at that time. The "job" I have came into being as a recommendation from my metal shop teacher who was moonlighting there.
