RFQ: Aluminum CNC

Greetings,

I have a simple part that I need CNC'd. I'm getting a wide range of quotes and some conflicting answers on the difficulty and whether it can be done on a 3-axis or not. Any feedback on ways to simplify/reduce machine time would be great. The holes on the edges are M4 tapped and need to be done before/after the CNC milling. I'm looking for just 5 of these parts right now. I'm located in Toronto, Canada. I believe I have all of the relevant parts in this zip file but I can re-export any others on request. Email is best correspondance:
philipATmorgansolarDOTcom

Files are here:
http://www.morgansolar.com/RFQ/Optics_Al_Frame_3.1.zip

Cheers!

No it can't be milled 2.5,3,4 or 5 axis as modeled.
It is theoretically a 2.5D job.
You need corner rads on the inside corners.
An end mill is round and spins round so something has to be round somewhere.
It can be done with Mill/EDM.

As designed (and depending on tolerance) I would be about $2500 each.

i agree, either cast or edm, possibly molded if you want it out of plastic.

A few concerns and requests have been addressed. The new part file is here:

*WRONG FILE WAS HERE*

I'm pretty sure it can be done out of aluminum. I'm just rusty and haven't worked with any machine shops in a while; thus the glaring problems with trying to machine the previous part. I've added bigger rads and some general tolerances. I really appreciate all of the comments/help.

I will be gathering quotes likely until mid next week.

Cheers,
Phil

tHIS ONE IS QUITE DIFFERENT FROM THE LAST ONE.
yOU STILL DON'T HAVE RADS IN THE NECESSARY INSIDE CORNERS (WHEN VIEWING FROM THE TOP).
tHE RADS ON THE OUTSIDE EDGES (FRONT AND BACK) MAKE IT WORSE TO MACHINE. tHIS PART NEEDS SETUP WITH THOSE EDGES VERTICAL TO INSTALL THE HOLES SO THOSE ARE EASIEST WITH SQUARE EDGES.
i WILL SEND THE BILL FOR MY CONSULTING BECAUSE i WILL SAVE YOU 10G IN MACHINING COSTS AND SOMEONE WILL INEVITABLY QUOTE YOU PENNIES ON THE DOLLAR TO ME ONCE IT IS EASY TO MACHINE (JUST WAIT TILL YOU NEED THEIR HELP LATER THOUGH).

OOPS SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS I AM IN THE MIDDLE OF DETAIL DRAWINGS AND FORGOT TO TURN IT OFF.

Put the sldprt in your future zip files. There may be anomolies in the iges. I get undercuts in it that are not shown in the pdf. I didn't notice these befor my last post or I would have "*****ed" about them too. ;-)

Wow, that was a BIG mistake.... the file should have been rev'd up, not down in the URL. I was sitting here scratching my head trying to figure out how you have more problems with this file. Anyway...

Sorry, I can't put the original file in the zip it has proprietary data.

There ya go Big Guy.
It would still be easier if the slots didn't have radii (front and back faces) but it is doable now.
I didn't look at your tolerances but I am assuming they are reasonable.

I have already received my desired amount of quotes. Thank you for taking the time to review my parts; I will keep everyone's contact on file for the next time I need CNC'd parts made.
