This is the sad reality of the way temp agencies rape employees, they get paid 3 to 5 dollars an hour off of the employee, and it is also the sad reality of the way some employers value their employees. They want you to own your own tools (which I do paid almost $25,000 for them), be able to program (which I can, MasterCam- paid over $3,500 in classes). All this so you can become a production machinist. Pitifull!!!!! Thank God that I don't have to work for those wages anymore, but I sure feel sad for those that either don't know any better, or are unwilling to relocate to better job markets. As for the employer, shame on you for paying such shameful wages. I hope someone treats your son and daughter exactly the same as you do your employees. |

| I can't get mad at the temp agencies. They are a business like any other, working of the principles of wholesale and retail. They also provide a service that is sometimes necessary. I actually found my current job thru cnczone. Without using a temp agency. I am also making quite a bit more then 27-37k a year, and I am not a competent machinist. I am very competent, and working on the machinist part. The blame for the wages really needs to lie on the shoulders of the individual willing to accept them. There was a time just a few years ago that I earned $240 a week, and I was happy with that. Times change though. |

Yes, I agree with you that part of the blame goes to individuals who will accept those wages, and like you, at one time I earned in a week what I make in a day now. However, some employers exploit their workers. The way that I see it, if shops in CA, TX, WA and other such states can pay their machinists top wages such as ours and still remain competitive, why is it that others cannot, unless it is due to incompetent management or just plain greed!!!! While I do believe our industry is saturated with shop owners that come from the manual machining era, and do not quite understand the complexities of the CNC market nor the capabilities, I do believe that just plain greed also plays a role. |

| I dont think this is the replies the original poster was hoping for and that is as it should be. Machining and programming is high stress and should pay better. I've 30+years at it and hate to see people accept these kind of wages. Anyone who can craft aerospace quality from a piece of stock to handing it to the q.a. should be paid 50,000 at least. my opinion |
