    Smile Will Work For Free

    Hi guys,
My name is Jon and I currently work in the engineering dept at my job. I say the engineering dept because while my title here may be engineer, I do not have a degree tho I am currently working towards earning my degree. I am expected to perform the same duties as the engineers here. I use solidworks and mastercam x2 and have limited experience with surfcam. I'm interested in doing contract work outside of my current job, but I'm not sure where to start or how to get my name out and maybe get some work started.

So if anyone is looking for a cnc programmer, I am willing to do a part or two for free. That way I can get more experience and see if I am capable of doing this on my own. I am hoping to build relationships with companies that might be able to offer me some contract work if they like my work.

The machines we use here are Fadal VMC's and Makino HMC's so those are the two mills that I have experience programming. We have lathes as well, but I have not written any lathe programs, but I am willing to try anything once!

I also use vericut, so I will run any program that I make through it to make sure there are no bugs or crashes! I am very thorough when it comes to programming so please dont expect me to be able to create a program in one day!

Please PM me for further info.

    software?

Have you purchased some type of software, or are you this where you work? Most cad/cam software is pretty expensive and most places don't really like their guys bringing in work after hours if they aren't getting a piece of the action.

Im looking into purchasing a dongle, I already have the software installed on my laptop. So yes until then I will most likely use one of the dongles from work. And I aint planning on doing this for free for long, I am just trying to get a little more experience under my belt.

My company looked into buying another dongle, price was $5,000. It was cheaper to buy the upgrade and get another dongle with it.

5000 dollars is a steep price, but if I feel that this will turn into a viable venture then I will have no problem justifying the purchase of a seat. Im gonna call our mastercam reseller tomorrow to see how much it will be for me to buy it. If I can come out cheaper by maybe riding the coat tails of the company I can probably talk my boss into allowing me to purchase a dongle under the company's account.

I hear you, brother! Tho I seldom use mine to make money with. Not adverse to it if anyone needs a lathe program from someone with over 22 years experience programing for, setting up, and running lathes.

Mastercam X2 basic mill (level 1) without a maint agreement is about 12K if I remember right. Bootleg is something like 25K in fines, several yrs jail time and damages. Call Jesse James he can tell you better.

I have no plans on aquiring a bootleg copy. Like i said I will contact our resellers today and get pricing on it. Our company has purchased several seats, so if I cant get it on my own I will try to talk to my boss and see if he will let me purchase an extra seat through them. They might cut us a deal considering we already have 5 or 6 seats.

What a wonderful attitude. Talk your company into getting a deal for you so then you can quit and possibly go into competition with them.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

LOL, boy you guys are jumping the gun today. I have no intention of quiting my job, I enjoy my job very much! I just would like to do this on the side as well to earn some extra cash, I get paid well as it is, but a little more wouldnt hurt.
