Does anyone have any tips for where I might be able to recruit CNC Machinists? I have been looking for skilled CNC Machinists for months because our company is growing so much. I have 3 openings right now (all of which are in Oregon). I work for a great company that has fantastic shop leads, great benefits, relocation assistance, tuition assistance etc., but the labor shortage here is making it impossible to hire enough people. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Colleen |

| Hi, I just suggested this on another job thread but I'll suggest it again! I'd try your local community colleges with CNC classes. Just call the machining instructor and he'd have a very good idea which students would have the appropriate aptitude/motivation to be a good machinist. I don't know how skilled you need them to be right off the bat, but I'm sure you will find some tallented kids looking for an opportunity to learn the trade and pay the rent. You do say "skilled" but if you can't seem to find anyone, I think the next best thing would be "some experience and good at learning." It would also be good to specify if you need machine operators, set up people or programmers/CAD/CAM type people. Much easier to find a CNC operator than a CNC machinist. Hope that helps! |

Thanks for the thoughts. We do actively work with several local community colleges and our local high school. In fact, of our 26 machinists probably 7-8 of them have come from or are attending a community college. Unfortunately, we are growing at such a pace that we really need to get some experience in the door so we can get the work done, and still have time to develop the newer machinists. If you know of any particular markets we can advertise in that would be great. I've hit Michigan a couple times, and we're trying to pull from the current military releases too. Oregon just happens to be screaming for skilled machinists right now. We can't grow them fast enough! Thanks again! |

| We are located in Newberg, OR (Yamhill County) which is southwest of Portland and Northwest of Salem--about 20 min. off of I-5. We're in the Oregon wine country. Wages really depend on experience, but for the level we're looking for I would venture a guess between $17-$22/hr with good med./dental benefits, tuition reimbursement, profit sharing, relocation assistance if needed, etc. |
