Looking for a summer internship? If you're a Mechanical Engineering student, working toward your degree, then you have reason to be excited about this opportunity!
Previously, we have simply compiled a long list of smaller tasks for our intern to complete. This summer, we want to try something different. We'll assign you to lead the development of one large project, to be completed by the end of the summer. Trust me, this looks a lot better on your resume than doing hundreds of smaller, less important tasks.
We have two projects to choose from. We would assign you depending on your interest and appropriate experience:
1. Redesign a "Force Profiling" machine. This task involves machine design, motion control, machine interface and data logging. In addition to design, there will be responsibility to oversee the construction and testing of the machine. Similar interests may be CNC machines, motion control, robotics, machine design, CAD design and control engineering. We have in-house CNC machining and prototype capabilities, and these resources will be at the your disposal, of course.
2. Anthropometrc study. This task involves making physical measurements of the sample population (people in our office) and analyze the data to spot trends and determine the best canidates for lifecasting. With the help of a mentor, you will select 20 samples and then coordinate the lifecasting (making a mold of live people). These models will then be scanned with our in-house laser scanner and imported into our CAD software, Pro/Engineer. Data points will be added to the models and measurements made to confirm the accuracy of the castings. The digital scanned models will be organized into a proprietary CAD library. Related interests include model making, casting techinques, art, statistics, CAD modeling, and ergonomics.
Whichever task is assigned, a mentor will be assigned to guide you. The main task will comprise 80-90% of your time. During the remaining time, we have smaller jobs such as model making, running prototype machines, and CAD modeling of small components. We hope this will be a fair exchange of value, and that you will benefit from this very practical experience!
We hope to find canidates who have an entheusiastic interest in related fields and are excited about learning on the job. In other words, we want someone who will enjoy these particular challenges!
Please contact me by email and send a copy of your resume. We will be sorting resumes and making within a week. So the sooner you send your resume, the better.
