Quote for surface grinding

I need the following ground flat to atleast 0.001 or better. Please quote.

The raw stock.
24"x24" by 3/4 thick aluminum plate. This plate comes finished to .005" flatness but I need it to .001 atleast.
24x24" by 3/4 thick steel plate (either D2 or 1018 steel) mill finish.

Sides can remain unfinished, just the top and bottom face need to be precision ground.

Surface finish should be suitable to use as a precision machine table surface.

I will be supplying the raw materials and paying for the shipping back and forth as well. Thanks!

Don't even think of grinding the material until you stress relieve and heat treat it.

Look locally for someone who blanchard grinds as the cost to ship the stuff will be substantial - even by ground.

Besides, you run the risk of losing flatness via handling damage by knuckle dragging shippers. If you spec it that flat, you'll want it to be treated nicely all the time and shippers don't always do that.

May I suggest a process for your aluminum piece:

1. machine flat
2. hard coat anodize
3. grind flat (hard coat anodizing will remain)

You'd want to grind first then anodize. Otherwise you grind the anodize away.

That is the point. But of course you wouldn't grind all of it away. This is a common practice with high precision aluminum surfaces that need to be durable.

(Hardcoat anodizing can be at made least 0.003" thick)

You can buy precision ground 7075 plate with OAL max tolerance of +/-.002 (in my experience these products are usually within .001)
$800 at McMaster Carr

May I suggest cast plate stock? We use it at our shop and it's within +/- .001 stock.

Ill look into the cast plate and rework the machining operations to make it more manifacturable. Thanks for all the input and suggestions! I'll close this rfq for now.

Mic 6 plate is specified as flatness within .005, again, it is usually much better than that but no promises.

I agree, Mic 6 (or machined cast al plate) is very flat, usually better than the specified tolerance. However, it is VERY soft and is easily damaged just from handling.

If you are planning to use this as a machine table, you should definately hard anodize it. (then surface grind after anodizing, if required)

We use mic 6 a lot at work for LARGE plates about 6 feet in length by 2 feet in width adn the stuff is pretty darn flat I would say its usually within .002 but it does ding easily.
