small woodworking job needed

I have wooden rings I need tapered. After asking around, people have said this is not safe to do on a planer, cnc is my best choice. So I can either not take these guy's words for it, and get a planer and try my luck, purchase and figure out how to use a cnc router, or get prices from you guys. Let me know the least expensive way to do this. I'll be getting quotes locally also.

Picture attatched: I have the rings on the before shot, the diameter will not be more than 10". I need them cut down to the after shot. As you can see it's just an angle I need put in. I can send the rings to you, what would it cost for two rings? Four rings? Ten rings?

Thanks!
Josh

This can be done with a planer and a jig or cnc'd. The jig would be a piece of wood with the face having the proper angle, and a tight mating recepticle the the ring drops into interior and exterior.

Have you thought of using a jig and a router? Are the rings made out of plywood, MDF or board stock?

MDF. How would I go about setting up a jig for that? I have two very nice routers that I could use for this, but I couldn't really think of how to route it like that. Pictures are helpful!

Thanks for the replys!

Build a jig similar to this with the proper slope on the sides for your application. Secure the ring to the base of the jig by any appropriate method. Attach your router base to a long board. Set your bit depth and move the router across the jig until the surface of the ring has been milled. Touch up with a sanding board.

Cxixer- Here are a few photos of a jig I built to do this job. It's rough but it worked. I cut a ring with a jig saw and used the outside scrap as a clamp. I moved the router in a clockwise direction moving into the work from the inside of the ring. If you drilled a hole in the center of the jig large enough for a vacuum cleaner hose you could suck out all the dust and chips. You might want to rotate the clamping ring 90deg. This would take the thin edge of the ring out of the clamping equation. You would have to create a pass through opening for the clamp screw in the pitch guides so that the clamp would bear on the clamping ring itself and not just the guides. This took me about 15 minutes to make so I'm sure it can be built better. PM me if you have more questions. I couldn't post the photos in the PM so I came back to the original thread.
