Job Title: Machinist, R&D Manufacturing (Journey-level)
Req Number: 25428
Division: Engineering
Department: Mechanical Engineering

Engineering Division - Advancing Science by Design

The Engineering Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is offering a career opportunity for a journey-level machinist to provide advanced technical support for complex and specialized assignments. This position is primarily assigned to the central shops area for general machining operations, under the supervision of the machine shop supervisor. May be temporarily assigned to a matrix assignment (away from the main shop facility), to provide direct machining support for specific projects/programs.

You will have an opportunity to:
•*Be a part of cutting edge technology.
•*Take on the challenge of supporting highly talented engineers and scientists in a unique R&D environment.
•*Be a part of a world-renowned, international research institution that is associated with 11 Nobel Laureates.

Key Responsibilities:
•*Apply advanced knowledge and expertise in journey-level machining technology, theory and practice to effectively and efficiently carry out assignments.
•*Design and fabricate work-piece fixtures for one-of-a-kind or production machine tool fabrication of metallic or non-metallic parts.
•*Advise staff (i.e., technicians, designers, engineers, scientists) regarding design for manufacturability.
•*Use both conventional and Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machinery to program, set-up and perform complex machining operations that include producing hardware components and assemblies bearing complex geometry, high precision, non-prismatic features, hidden features and difficult to machine materials.
•*Use computers and Computer Aided Design(CAD)/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software applications to handle native electronic drawings, solid models, and generic file formats such as .dxf and .iges.
•*Apply appropriate and efficient tool/cutter path to geometry, proper machining sequences, spindle speeds and federates.
•*Generate, edit and transfer appropriate machine tool controller-specific part program instructions.
•*Decode blueprints, sketches, parts lists, and assembly diagrams.
•*Understand and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)standards, including comparing Datum Reference Frames to Datum Features for correct decoding.
•*Understand the symbols and terminology describing part feature form, orientation, size and location.

Qualifications:
•*Typically 2-5 years of demonstrated technical understanding of machining and related mechanical process theory and work practices
•*Proven understanding of technical shop mathematics
•*Conventional and CNC machine tool experience with complex, precision (to .0005 inch) hardware components and assemblies
•*Experience with CAD and CAM applications
•*Demonstrated knowledge, skill and work experience in performing set-ups, testing, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, operation and maintenance of sophisticated mechanical, shop related, and scientific apparatus, equipment and systems.
•*Demonstrated ability to select, set-up and use appropriate hand, power, and specialized machine tools
•*Ability to read/decode complex blueprints, sketches, parts lists, layout and assembly drawings and operation, calibration, and repair manuals
•*General computer application skills with spreadsheets, databases and word processors.
•*A.S. or B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology or Industrial Engineering Technology and/or successful completion of a formal machinist apprenticeship-program, or the equivalent in formal industrial training is preferred.

Physical aspects of the position:
•*May need to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and/or coordinate a crane lift for 50 lbs., on occasion.

Notes: This is a career appointment and requires completion of a background check. The position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. Determination of job classification level is based on relevant experience, knowledge, skill, and abilities of the successful candidate.
