    Can you machine 27" x 18" x 3" ?

I am trying to make something nice for my Dad here. He has a boat which has really poorly designed transom hatches. I have designed some nice ones in SolidWorks, but now am trying to find an affordable way to get them built. I could have some firm over in the far east do them manually and hope to someday actually get the parts, but I would rather farm it out to one of you adventurous souls.

The windows are to be made in 6063 aluminum and subsequently powder coated. Alternatively, they could be done in 6061 though it doesn't have as good corrosion properties. Other alternatives may be ABS or other strong plastic or composite materials that exceeds 9000psi strength and are corrosion resistant. I am open to suggestions here, can tyweak the design if it helps, whatever, the driving factor being finding a way to make these affordably. (And no, all people who have boats are NOT made out of money! My father who is retired and living on a fixed income.)

The assembly is made up of 4 parts, and there is a right and a left version (only posting one here). If you can handle parts of this size and would like to give it a shot, shoot me an email with your price. Hobbiest are as welcome to bid on this as those doing this for a living! Cheers!

    Pogcarr,

I have a 50" x 25" X 26" VMC. It should be no problem to make these parts. What kind of time frame are you looking at for a delivery? I will try to quote this as soon as I get to the shop in the morning.

Well, I have priced materials from the ussual sources and aluminum plate has become ridiculously expensive! Hopefully some of you know of some good sources for it that don't charge a "hobbiest's premium". If someone has a suggestion for another material that comes in 1/2", 1" and 2" thicknesses, has reasonably high strength and corrosion resistance I am game to hear about it!

My timeframe is very open ended. If this could be run cheaper as a job when you have nothing else to keep the machine busy, then that would be great.

    pogcarr:

    Try www.asapsource.com for materials.

6061 is about $3.50/lb. Delrin is about $1.60/cu-in.
Delrin might be quite different in quantity.

If you have a large window hole, then maybe you should consider casting.
