How to grind Part of 3 mm ID

Hello,

I want to grind a Bearing ID of size ( ID is 3.00 mm ). Actually a shaft passes through it. The size & ovality accuracy is 5-10 microns.

The BIG question to me is how should I machine such Small ID.??

Some options -

=> WIRECUT - Can I wirecut such small ID on a Wirecut machine. Will i get the desired accuracy, size & ovality on a Wirecut Machine ?

=> REAMING - I tried reaming it, but it did not fetch the accuracy. I observed a ovality of 25 microns..

=> GRINDING - Is Grinding such small ID (on cylindrical Id grinding machine) possible ?

Thanks
Ashish

Ashish

How much material are you removing ? Honing might be the way to do this.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I can predrill the hole upto any size to leave material for honning.

Is honning done on a drilling machine or a SPM is needed for it ?

Can honning give that desired amount of accuracy in terms of OVALITY ?

Thanks
Ashish

Honing

In a "drill press" it is referred to as Lapping basically the same type of metal removal just not as accurate. A lot of guess work as to when it's finished. Getting it honed with a honing machine (sunnen) it is much more accurate and your concentric run will be more true as the size and finish will be more of what you are looking for. Either way you want to leave only a few Thousandths of an inch (.005) to clean up while you should start out with a good finish after drilling. If you wired it out true you will only have to leave perhaps .002 and the finish hone will go better then twice as fast.
Hope this helps

Really thanks GENTLEMEN.....

I was very very much concerned about Machining such Small ID. The whole project was on stake because of this ID Machining operation.

Thanks, ONCE AGAIN
Ashish
