    Rendering everytime.

    Hello all,

Installed W7 64bit end of last year, so reinstalled EdgeCam 2009R2.
Before, I was running Vista 64bit without any problems.
Now everything works fine, but I have one annoying problem I think I had before, but got rid of then, somehow.
After EVERYTHING I do in Edgecam (delete a line, activate a layer, make a toolpath visible, etc.)
the bar at the bottom left of the screen slowly (4 seconds) fills up diplaying the message "Rendering".
It does this even when there's nothing visible before or after the action, like when making a layer active that is not visible.
So I'm constantly waiting 4 seconds for it to fill up before I can do anything else. VERY annoying to say the least.
Does anyone recognise this, or even better: can anyone tell me how to get rid of this.
I allready tried all I can think of: disabled Aero, disabled/enabled all advanced graphics options one by one and in all possible combinations,
installed the latest graphics card drivers (ATI FireGL V56oo), etc, etc.
There must be something I missed, because I distinctly remember having this problem before and getting rid of it again.
Please, can someone tell me what I missed?

    Thanks,
    Rob

    Service pack and hotfix

    Hi

There is a service pack and hotfix you need to install to solve this issue. I am not sure which one specifically tackles it as installed both at the same time which did cure it. Just log in to the customer support area and download them both.

Tried it, but alas: no change.
Still "Rendering" for 4 seconds every time I change layers.
    Thanks anyway.
    Any more ideas?

    Regards,
    Rob

Edgecam does not fully support Windows 7 until 2010 R1. It may be able to run older versions, but behavior and issues could be unpredictable.

Install Edgecam 2010 R1 and see if you have those same issues.

    Jeremiah

    @Jeremiah:

I am indeed suspecting something like that.
When running on Vista64 I distinctly remember a process called "Edgsvr64.exe", or something of the kind, running along when EdgeCam was calculating a cycle.
I'm 100 percent sure something with "64" in it was running, anyway.
Now, under W7 64, there's no "64" in sight at all in taskmanager.

Update: just checked with the EdgeCam supplier here in Holland:
the pocess is called edgesrv64.exe and this is indeed definitely NOT running on my PC and W7 64.
This condemns me to a few options: learn to live with this slow rendering until all of our clients use 2010R1, or install Vista64 alongside W7,
or try to install 2009R2 in such a way the installer thinks it's installing on a Vista64 system.

All in all: it's going to cost me a lot of extra time, one way or the other.
    But this is again consistent with my big issue with EdgeCam: it costs you way too much time before you can actually machine the part;
time spent fighting to get the software to do what you want it to do, instead of actually just programming the part. Bah!

    Regards,
    Rob

Ok, so EdgeCam 2009R2 is installed on 64bit W7 as if it is installed on a 32bit system.
Haven't had the same problem with other software with 64bit functionality.
If it installs fine on 64bit Vista, it will install fine on 64bit W7.
    Except EdegCam.
    Typical.
My advice to all: don't install EdgeCam 2009R2 on a 64bit Windows 7 system.
But that doesn't help me to get rid of the 3 seconds waiting time after almost EVERYTHING I do in EdgeCam.
Can't be EdgeCam running in pure 32bit mode on a 64bit system alone, can it?
As I mentioned: I've had this before, and got rid of it before, somehow.
So I'm still open to suggestions about how to remedy this waiting for the rendering bar bottom left.
Could it be a graphics card thing? I installed the latest drivers (FireGL V5600).
Drivers are 64bit, or so they tell me.
Can it be the incompatibility of EdgeCam installed as 32bit and the 64bit graphics drivers? Nah: other 32bit software runs fine.
    Then again: this is EdgeCam...
    Anyone?

    Regards,
    Rob

Instead of spending a lot of time trying to work around the issue, why don't you install Edgecam 2010 R1? Or do you not have the correct license expiry to run that version?

I have customers that use W7 32 and 64 bit, and Edgecam 2010 R1 and they do not have any of these issues you are referring to. But I also tell them not to run any earlier version on their W7 PC's as well.

    @Jeremiah:

Yes, well, most of our customers still use 2009R2 and are waiting to upgrade until they have definitive proof that 2010 is stable,
which is a very wise policy, especially when using EdgeCam.
Usually it is best to wait until the first patch is out.
I just made the mistake of installing 64bit W7 too soon, assuming that when EdgeCam runs well on 64bit Vista,
it must run ok on 64bit W7 too (silly me), and now I'll have to live with the consequences.
I can't just start using 2010, because then my customers who use 2009R2 can't open my files anymore.
Never mind; I'll live. And the first patch for 2010 will be out soon enough; I already heard some complaining.

    Regards,
    Rob

    Hello Rob,
The 2010 R1 Service Pack is already out. Do you have a reseller that supports you? They should be able to provide you with a link to download it. It comes in 2 flavors, one is a full SP1 DVD, and another is just a small patch file.

I also had another thought, what version of W7 are you using? Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate have a Windows XP mode which may be worth trying. I have not tried this myself so I'm not sure how stable it would be.

As I explained below: it's no use working in 2010 if most of your customers still use 2009R2.
And the XP-mode solution was also suggested by EdgeCam support here in NL.
My version is Home Premium, so this is not an option, but even if it was, I'm sure it wouldn't improve the speed of things,
as it still means putting an extra layer between the software and W7, wouldn't it?
But as I said: I'll live. Customers will be installing W7 and 2010R1 soon enough.

    Regards,
    Rob
