File type

I found a video on you tube ,when I searched edgecam, and I thought the part that was being machined was way to intricate for normal cad programs.

Does any body know how to create a file or model like the one in the video? What type of program would they have used? What type of file it would be saved as so that it would work with edgecam? And does anybody have an example file that a person would share ?
Any help would greatly be appreciated

Those types of models are created by using 3D laser scanning.

Point cloud data is created and then can be rendered into an STL model by using the appropriate software.

I am familiar with stl files but not with iges files, how is an iges file different from an stl?

Do you know of any companies web sites that sell scanners that are able to scan a solid object into a computer model or any web sites where you can get example files?

Check out the following site:
http://www.peak-solutions-llc.com

They deal with Edgecam and also 3D scanners and printers.

If you speak with them tell them that Jeremiah from ATS referred you.

Thanks.

I guess you could make models like that in 3d-studio and probably in solidworks/inventor to.
But any program you choose it's going to be tricky to get it done. Theese kind of models are simply hard to model.

If you want to copy a physical object then 3dscanning is probably easiest, if you just want a similar 3d model then you could start googling for "3d model" eventually you'll find something worth the search effort

I made a contactless 3-D scanner in Labview.

An object is placed on a table, turning 6rpm.
One side I placed a spot, other side a simple Webcam.

The algoritm uses border detection and an angle convertor.
It gives a pointclowd, what I needed.

Limitations of the algoritm is it can't handle holes. I don't know how a pointclowd files handle holes. How to know witch side is air or material?

Limitation of the shadow method is undercut, with a laser this could be solved.
