Unhappy POCKET WITH ISLAND (EDGECAM 2010 R1)

    Hello good people,

Im trying to machine a pocket with an island in the middle. The problem is that when asked the for the geometry to machine, i select the pocket geometry and double enter. Now when i generate the toolpath, the roughing tool goes and machine (erase) even the island!

    Surely im missing a point.

    Can you please help me.

    Thanks in advance.

I don't know edgecam, however, I can't imagine it would be much different then other cams.

It sounds like you may be missing the the island area of the pocket selection. IE Pocket starts here and ends here. Assuming the island is the same Z level.

If the island is at a different Z level then the outer edges, you'd have to set the pocket depth to not remove the island. Again, sounds like your "ending" selection in the pocketing isn't being given.

    Just my thoughts.

Are you using 3d solid model data or 2d wireframe as the source?

You might have to define your stock for the cycle or define a boundary or containment area

    Hi Mousongie,
Pocket with raised boss, assume its a solid model

    Method 1 -
Create a containment boundary around the top of the pocket.
use an "Edge Loop" feature if you want it to be associative
to the model in case of a design change or if you want
to "reload" a different solid model for a family of parts.
(Use "Geometry from Edges" if you just want 2D lines)

In the rough or profile cycles select the entire solid model,
and the containment boundary to limit the tool to the pocket.
set the "boundary control" modifier to tool inside.

turn on "detect flat land" so the top of the island will get
    machined not just avoided.

    *****

    Method 2 -
depending on the geometry you may need a pocket feature
and a separate boss feature for the Island, in the roughing
cycle select both features. Finishing the features separately

    If its 2D wireframe geometry,
you can make the top of the boss a containment boundary
and set control to tool outside

there are lots of other ways to do it -
combinations of multiple boundaries and or multiple features
