Ok I have a question I have never done any deals on ebay untill a few days a go, so I was bidding on some tools the other day and when I put a bid right away i got a message that says somebody else over bid you. and then I put 1 more dollar and I got the same message how that the crap works?
When you place a bid, it is your maximum bid, however your bid amount is not actually bumped up to that amount and revealed to other bidders unless that is necessary to make you the highest bidder, rather if you have the current highest bid, it will be set to the next "increment" above the previous bid. If someone comes along and just bids the next increment higher than the current price, then if your maximum is still higher, eBay will automatically outbid the latest bidder on your behalf by the current increment, and so on, until either your maximum is reached or the other guy gives up.
There is another phenomenon that can come into play at the end of an auction called "sniping", where software automatically does the final bidding - see Auction sniping - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
