Jumping back to the Alarm pin wiring connection. DMM-Tech got back with me today and they gave me the opposite of what i posted before. I was thinking it should be wired as such....Minus/GND side of 24VDC supply be wired to Pin 5 (COM) of drive, then Pin 18 of drive wired to Kanalog Opto 0 minus pin and plus side of 24VDC supply to Kanalog Opto 0 plus pin.
DMM-Tech said the following...
"The alarm to your kanalog should be wired as:
- Connect positive side of 24VDC to DYN4 pin 18 (alarm)
- Connect DYN4 pin 5 (com) to kanalog OPTO_IN_PLUS.
- Connect kanalog OPTO_IN_NEG to 24VDC negative side (Gnd)
The resistance is already incldued in the kanalog. It says it already has a 10kohm resistance so this is ok."
What am i missing?

Well that should work also. Think of it like you had a battery, switch, and light bulb.
24V supply = Battery
DYN4 = switch
Kanalog Opto = light bulb
There are two options where to put the switch. Both will work.
However I prefer our original arrangement for the following reason: I think their "COM" signal is common to multiple of their outputs (switches). If you try to wire up more than one of their outputs to more than one opto input you will find their method doesn't work.
Here is a diagram that shows how a number of switches with a common negative terminal will work if the common terminal is connected to GND

Ok. Looking at the manual to my VFD i can control Speed and Direction of spindle by RS485 or second option would be Speed control by 0-10V and direction/stop control by input terminals on drive. I have plans to add a automatic tool changer down the road. Which option would be the better one?

THe use of modbus over RS485 tends to me more accurate than sending an analog voltage, depending on the hardware involved. The KANALOG has good DACs, but the other advantage is you can monitor pretty much all VFD status, current, speed, current, etc. with Modbus just have to add some code to put that information into KmotionCNC screenset.

Any idea how well the RS485 works when a potentiometer is used to override a commanded speed? The pot would be wired to a Kanalog analog input.

That should not be an issue at all. You will need to add some code in one of your threads, but I used modbus in Mach3 for my spindle and had a pendant with the override pot and it worked perfect. My pendant for my kmotioncnc machine does not have the spindle or feedrate override pots and I really miss that feature for my bigger machine. I guess I will need to buy a new pendant or add pots to my existing pendant. Modbus sends the commands to the VFD and the override pot would just send another Modbus command to the VFD. You can probably find someone who has already implemented this and has there C code available.

You will most likely need to get a USB-to-RS485 converter. This will be viewed as a standard serial port in Windows. I would think you can use the converter on the PC USB port, not certain how KmotionCNC would access a standard PC port, but I am certain they can do that.

Unless iam misunderstanding something, the JP10 connector on Kanalog board will transmit the data like RS485, i just think Rs232 and RS485 are different voltages?

RS232 uses +/- 12V in its standard configuration. The RS485 is closer to 5V but is a differential signal carried on two wires with a common ground. If you used the built in RS232 on the KANALOG you will need to wire that to a RS232-to-RS485 converter. They sell them on ebay as I recall. If the ground on the VFD is tied to the Ground on the KANALOG then you only need two wires from the RS485 converter to the VFD.

Ok. You jogged my memory. I remember going down this road on another mill i had that used a VFD from Automation Direct and RS485. I have a ebay convertor somewhere as i never used it. If i go this route i will get a better converter.
