    Default vises

What in everyone using for vises on their Dyna Mechtronic mills?

I'm using a single import 6" CNC vise right now. I used to have two of them but there wasn't enough room to have material outside the vise jaws so I removed one. I'm thinking of switching to a double 6" Kurt vise mounted sideways to fit more stuff into the work envelope. Anyone use one like that before? Is it a pain to have to tighten the vise on the side vs in front of you?

Timothy, can you show this from another angle? I can not figure out what I am seeing? It looks like the 2 import vises from the upper picture are now below the table? Somehow it looks like you have 2 vises holding a double jaw vise on the table. It looks like it is coming up behind the table and would interfere with full Y travel. It must be an illusion.

Yea, I know. Bad photoshop. Paint actually, I don't have Photoshop...
The handles are leftover that I didn't edit out.

The vise I'm looking at buying is the Glacern 6" double vise.

Or the Kurt 6" double vise. I'm not sure which one yet.

So do you really have a Dyna Mill? Sure that is not "created with paint"? Good looking parts on that mill being edited? Cant trust anything anymore. LOL Glad to know it was a fake image. I was having some kind of problem trying to figure out those vises were clamping the table. Are the chips "paint" also?

Maybe I should just build my fantasy machine on Photoshop/Paint. If I could make a virtual mill or lathe maybe I would be satisfied and think how much I would save! So much more room in the garage, no chips to clean up, no broken end mills. Too funny.

Can you comment on how best to lock these vises down to the table? I have 2 6" vises I got with my machine, and am using a generic clamping set to hold it in place, and I don't like it!!! Are there vise-specific clamps that use less table space or something? I hate that they are clamp down and don't have the bolt tab holes...

I took both of my 6" vises apart and drilled some holes in the base to match the slot spacing on my table. I then fastened them down with flat head bolts and t-slot nuts. A custom made alignment keys hold everything square.

I'll take some pictures tomorrow and post them up.

Would love to see those pix. I don't get why they make vises like this... With the clamps they just take up too much space!

Dont trust Tim, he is probably using "paint" to create the vise picture you want to see! JK

Here is my 6" CNC vise with the holes in the bottom.

Just as Fastest1 suspected, I painted it.

Blue. I like blue. (its so hard to stay inside the lines...)

I have dimensions if you bolting it to a dm4000 or dm4400 table if you need them.

I like that idea, though if you put the bolts slightly off center, you could tighten the T-nuts without having to dissassemble the vise (which you have to do with them right under the shaft, right?). I will have to check my vise out, see how it comes apart, and get to work on a similar solution. Thanks for the (non-photoshopped!) pix

In my application, the three bolts that hold the vise down are under the stationary and movable jaws so I have no choice but to install the vise base, then assemble it.

I service and clean the vise every 2 months anyway so I'm getting used to the strip down procedure.

Don't forget to take some pictures and post them up when you get it all worked out.

One of my production jobs requires a bunch of round stepped spacers to be made and since I don't have a CNC lathe yet I just make them in the mill. However it takes what seems like forever because I can only do one at a time in the three jaw chuck clamped in the vise. So this time I bought a SnapJaws extended V jaw set and replaced the stock jaws. Well, sort of....
The 'budget' vise has different bolt spacing than a traditional Kurt vise so I had to made some adapters to make everything fit nicely.
Did it ever work great. Solid clamping and easy to swap out parts without having loose bump stops here and there.

Just another reason to get a new Kurt vise....

So.... no one has pictures of their vise's?
You know, the one's bolted down to the CNC machine table?

Not the 'other' vises... we all have those.
And I'm sure I don't want to see pictures of that...

You want vises? Here's a pair of 3" Kurts on a Dyna 2800. This setup allows me to clamp a fixture plate large enough to reach the entire X, Y envelope.

I have a Quad 1 vise, 2 Tormach CNC vises and 3 4 inch CNC vises from Little Machine Shop. I would LOVE to have another QUAD 1 vise.

You can buy GOOD PARTS or you can buy CHEAP PARTS, but you can't buy GOOD CHEAP PARTS.
