    Newbee Question

I am considering building a Pipe Dream. I choose the Pipe Dream because of the low cost. My goal is to learn how to operate the machine then upgrade to a larger more accurate machine like the Joes 2006. I am going to purchase electronics and steppers that I could also use on the Joes. My question is can I mix different screws on different axis’? For an example, can I use ½-10 2 start on the X axis, ½-8 2 start on the Yaxis and regular 1/4 -20 rod on the Z axis? If I can, I would like to use the Pipe Dream X-axis screw on the Joes Y-axis, the Pipe Dream Y-axis screw on the Joes Z-axis, and I would only have to purchase a screw for Joes X-axis. That would save some money in the long run AND increase the precision and speed of the Pipe Dream.

Should be able to. Your motor tuning for each axis will be different but as long as the acceleration and IPM for each is set the same for the X and Y you should have any cutting issues.

I've seen guys use belts on the X and lead screws on the Y and Z.

Looks like it's not too bad as a first CNC but......at 8 or 12 IPM cutting speed.....man you will be pulling your hair out....
