Bent Ball Screw. How to straighten ?

    Hi Group

Does anyone have a technique for straightening a bent
ball screw. The diameter is 5/8. I`ve got about five bends
    to take out.

    Thanks

    hi,
Find the center of each bend arc and apply pressure accordingly to bring back the curve. You may need to start very lightly and check often for straightness.....else you could over-compensate.

I suppose before starting with a ballscrew straightening process....I would determine what caused this problem, correct it and then determine if I want a ballscrew with 8 to 10 bends after straigtening...might be cheaper in the long run to find a larger diameter ballscrew after correcting whatever caused the problem....or did you buy it with 4 bends?

Yah!... with that many bends it may have been twisted too when the "accident" occured.

Small gradual bends can be staightend in very tedious little steps.
Beware that any bend that permanently deformed the screw will
also have lengthened the screw a very small amount.
This can not be reversed and the accuracy of that screw will have
    to be taken into consideration.
    Good Luck

    Hi,

Try this, mount the screw in the collet of a floor standing drill, support the other end in a ballbearing and fix it with something appropriate, turn on the machine with resonable speed not too low and not to high use a shaft of hard wood towards the bent part just a moment and with some luck you should have a very straight ball screw again.

I not sure about the two fix points in this case, but if it is a very long ball screw I can think that this should be necessary, a short axle can with ease be straighten out with this procedure.
