    retired engr

My goal is to build a small cnc mach. to replace my failing hand/eye coordination. I want to scan in my inlay design and convert them to dxf format via corelDraw8. I have downloaded KCAM4 but when I import a dxf file, I get only a green bar in the z axis. DXF viewers confirm that I have a good image file? Help, what are the magic words?

Are you wanting to design and build the machine, or just buy one? I would recommend the V90 if you want an "off the shelf" package. It is a very low cost system, and while no where near as rigid as other systems, it is easy to build and produces very nice results. Their Yahoo! message board is also very informative. You can find it here:

retired engr - importing dxf files

I have a moderate knowledge of Corel Draw and Photoshop as well as several graphic generators. My problem is not generating the dxf file, it is getting KCAM to recognize the file. It will not display in KCAM. I am sure it is due to my limited familiarity w/ KCAM that is the problem.

There aren't many KCam users around, as most people use Mach3 or EMC these days.

Can you post the .dxf? I'm guessing that Corel is outputting objects that KCAM won't read, usually splines.

    dxf insertion problems

I think I attached a file. I'm begining to think it would just be easier to generate x,y,z commands directly from dxf files as that is all I want to do, at least for now.

I tried opening your .dxf in AutoCAD and Aspire, and neither showed anything in it.

    dxf file problems

I opened the file with notepad, it looks good from that aspect. I generated a simple triangle, it does not load correctly either.

Oh bye the bye least I forget, I really appreciate the time and effort all of you are giving.

The triangle loads OK in AutoCAD, but not the other one. Corel .dxf files are notorius for not being very good. You might want to look at this.

    dxf problems

Thanks to all. I investigated further and found that the files from Corel were indeed corrupted.

You know, only software manufactures and doctors can sell you a screw up product and then charge you to fix them. I'll regroup and charge ahead in some direction later.

Thanks again to all who offered help. Ken
