hey guys, first time poster here, but I have been haunting the forums for a couple weeks reading everything I can.
So i have decided to build a small cnc router to machine wood, i am using plans for a solid gantry, moving table with around 24 inches travel in the x and y axis, using pipe and roller blade bearings. Now my plan is to build it with almost all hardware store parts, then upgrade the screws and other components once i get the machine functional.
As far as electronics i am leaning towards the following kit, http://www.xylotex.com/3AxSysKit-425.htm
my question is, does this kit seem like it will fulfil my needs? and does anyone know if xylotex has a relatively decent reputation?
Welcome Tanis. I have been using the Xylotex 4 axis 425 oz-in system for about 3 years with good results on a similar sized machine. I think it is a good, low cost starter kit. The Xylotex 425 motors have a reputation for having resonance issues though...
I'm using a Xylotex with good results as well, but I had to make dampers for my steppers. Without them, it resonated very badly.

hey guys thanks for the reply's, poking around a bit the damping solutions people are using seem pretty simple (i love simple). Also, is this resonance problem worse with certain construction materials? (some materials vibrate more than others) my base is made of rather heavy wood (my helper grumbled while helping me load the truck)
You may want to get smaller motors that will spin faster. I'm using 253 oz PacSci steppers with 1/2-8 2 start acme, and get 170ipm on my Y axis, and 150 ipm on my X axis.

Gerry is right. Even with radial dampners, my 425's will only achieve around 90 IPM on 1/2"-10 2 start. I don't think the resonance issue has anything to do with your construction materials...
ok, thanks for the reply's, due to you advice, and reading a bit more about the motors i have ordered the 269 oz motors, i guess bigger isnt always better
