    5-axis Gantry Mill progress

    hi everybody,
Despite of world wide crisis I started with my new mill I have planned and drawed during past 8 months.
    5-axis.
Added sketsh (not all components are drawn).
This is composite mill - used massive Aluminium up to 80mm thick, machined artifact commercial granite panels. All gaps and emty places filled with composite-granite between thoses.
X-"walls" are 75mm thick (hight > 500mm), Y-bridge is machined from 650x210x78mm solid Aluminium, Z-axis made from 600x170x78mm solid Alu. There are no main parts thinner than 15mm Aluminium. Face U pate is 15mm thick aircraft aluminium ...
Stationar table surface is 650x630x30 pressed granite, total thickness of table 78mm. There are diamont cut holes though, there will be M8 hollow bronze plugs 80mm long ... 4/5 axles will come bit later, when main machine is ready. 4-th axis is 250mm wide, 80mm thick, 5-th axis table has 180mm diameter. For driving 5-th axis I use FA15/49 Cyclo drive (integrated in to ...), for 4-th axis I have FA35/109 - I hope to change this for smaller one ...
X,Y,Z axis uses ISEL 16/5 ballscrews with TWO zero backlash nuts for each.
X axis gas two sets of screws/touble nuts.
    Z -> 2 rails 4 cars SHS20LV, Y -> 2 rails 4 cars HGW25CC, X -> 2 rails 4 cars HGH25HA. My first ATC spindle is also ready.
    I already bought 5 x VCD-E (+5 servo motors) from www.granitedevices.fi .
Mach3 (15-350 Model) also ordered - hopefully next week I can touch it with my own hands.

Several parts are ready and I started with frame up. It will be very hard, but I hope ...

Im sure you wonder - why such kind of strange design ...
Yeah, but why to build separate screens and cabinets?

    Regards,
    Herbert

Gap between pressed granite and aluminium sides will be filled with composites when all parts mounted, leveled, measured, checked over and one time more leveled ...
Why I choiced this commercial pressed granite? Because Im not sure able Im to get so perfect surface.

    Y-beam. L-650mm, 210mm wide and 78mm thick - hopefully rigid enough.
Sketch shows how mounted with end blocks.

Special Thanks to Dan Falck - converted my DWGs to STP,

    Regards,

    Herbert

Z-pillar (beam?) is also machined but lot of things need to be done before its ready ...
As you can see - also very massive
You can see all rails, ballscrews, cyclo drives, 5 x VCD-E (+5 servo motors) from www.granitedevices.fi ...
    No more photos yet.

    Cheers,
    Herbert,

    goes back to workshop

    Seems impossible without problems.
Today morning I bring back to factory these pressed-granite panels. The hight of sides was near 1mm over and thickness was not exact what ordered - they forgot to over-grind the back side.
Tomorrow afternoon hopefully will be done.
Such kind stories are very tiring
    cheers,
    herbert

Problems solved, now composite panels fits correctly
When all parts ready then will go on with frame up.
    Lot of threadings ... dog-tired

Beautiful build! It looks VERY sturdy, are you planning on machining metal with it?

Idea was to get it sturdy, rigid, no resonances ... not like our older diy does.
and to get away from building separate cabinet/ enclosures,
Yes - sliding front door will come, not drawn on the sketch.
Whereby rorary stages of 4(5) axis mounted into side walls,
    It is semi-composite-granite-aluminium built
Automatic tool change, self-washing, central lubrication ...

We milling most of all aluminium,
But will see - perhaps even some steel.

    Regards,
    Herbert

    hi again,
Spindles I spoke about will be ready next week. Just holes and threadings leftover. Looks very nice, sad to sink in to composites.
Today at last it was possible to try Y-axis, everything seems OK.
It goes not as quick as planned, every part takes up time,
Few things have been made newly, some solutions changed.
Granite rubbles, sand, quartzitic dust and 5L of WS Epoxy while away the time ... bide their time.
Few photos show that not mach have been supervened,

    Cheers,
    Herbert
