2 drive motors for 1 axis

I see lots of cnc routers for sale with two drive motors on the X axis, who would you drive those motors? I assume you can use a three axis controller board and a Darlington array for two motors accepting the same commands is this right?

Normally, you use a 4 axis board and slave the drives in software, or another option is use one motor and the use a belt drive to connect to the two leadscrews.

Is there a good reason why you can't use 2 drives but tie the step and direction pins together so that they look like just one drive to the software?

I tested it with mach and worked but i used a 4 axis drivers, because each drive will need to be powered individually, I just jumpered the step and direction from breakout board.
