    Xylotex Stepper Stalling While Free From Router

    I have a 3 axis 269 oz. Stepper motor kit from xylotex. I have built a cnc router from david steele's plans. I have been have stalling issuse show up at random so I have been fine tuning with much frustration only to find out that if I jog the x axis or the y axis close to 28 ipm the motor will stall even if the motor is free from the cnc in my hand!

    I'm pretty sure this is not normal, I would just run it at the 35 ipm that I have tuned it for, I can jog x and y at 35 ipm all day, but as soon as I drop it down to 28 it will stall, or if I'm cutting a circle or somthing where the y axis slows down around that speed it will stall.

    Please help I have a lot of work to do and this problem has just been driving me nuts.....

    Hi,

    The usual reason for steppers stalling is resonance.
    What is the rating of your power supply Amps Volts?
    Also check where you have your Vref set.
    Are the steppers set up bipolar parallel or bipolar series?

    Not familiar with Steele's plans....is the leadscrew the threaded rod variety with delrin nuts? If so then you may have a binding issue.....calculate the steps it takes to go at 35 ipm....

    I'm thinking that this is a resonance problem as well. My P/S is 24 vdc 6 amp. My vref is @ 3.35v and does not drop during use. As for the bipolar parallel or bipolar series question..... I don't know I've been looking fir like 10 min trying to figure it out, but this is how I wired it.

    YB# Black
    YB Green
    YA# Red
    YA Blue.

    Viper.....

    My leadscrew drives a threaded rod coupler. I also checked for drag and there is none that I can feel.

    Four wire motors so can only wire one way.

    Do all your steppers stall at 28 ipm?

    No the x axis does not stall.

    Try changing the Y axis motor for your X will at least eliminate the motor being faulty.

    If the stepper still stalls sounds like there may be a fault on the board; I could be wrong.

    I will try that first thing tomorrow. Unless xylotex gives me a solution before then... Either way I'll be sharing my results.

    Steppers not under load have entirely different dampening characteristics than one's on a machine. It's not unusual to be able to stall a stepper at lower rates with no dampening. If you have anything you could put on the shaft of the motor to give it some flywheel effect you might have better results.

    What in the way of RPM does 28IPM represent? Most steppers running at 24 volts will not spin over about 600 RPM.

    The velocity and acceleration for a motor (and its resonance point) changes with the dynamics of table mechanics.

    I don't have an answer for your problem, but I have a Xylotex and have noticed that there are speeds where the motors run smooth as silk, and others where they sputter and hesitate. I assumed my motor tuning was at fault...

    Maybe unrelated, but I was losing steps due to overheating. Make sure you stick a decent fan on the board to keep things cool.

    I'm not sure what rpms it is producing but I have it set up for 28800 step per inch in 1/8 micro stepping mode.
