    Plunge cut problems

I'm having problems with when ever I do a cut the cutter doesn't get to the DOC before it starts jogging so I have a step where I plunge in. At first I was thinking it feedrate setups I've messed some with it but I'm not seeing any improvements.

This is happening on everything I cut and I've used cut 2d and v-carve pro with the same results.

Do I have a machine setup problem? Mach3 configuration? My Z axis lead screw?

Machine is a CRP 4x4 with nema 23's R&P, K2 Z axis with .1 pitch (I plan to upgrade for faster rapids) currently my X & Y rapids are set to 400 and the Z is 200.

I set my X, Y, and Z for the same feedrate, use 15 to 20 ipm for plunge rate with flat nose router bits, and 30 ipm for V-bits. Haven't had this problem so far. One of the more experienced guys here may recommend something different, but it depends a lot on the cutter type you are using.

I've seen it with single and 2 flute cutters both in 1/8 and 1/4 sizes Have not done any V bits lately.

I'll try setting all my axis to the same and try lowering my plunge rates.

    Increase the Z axis acceleration.

What are all your axis accels set to?

unless you have a x or y move on the same g1 line as a Z, it will complete the Z plunge before moving x or y.
Maybe what you are seeing is backlash in the Z. while plunging, the backlash is taken out by the axis being forced up, and when the x or y moves, the Z ramps down? I would expect this to be a ramp though, and not a step like you describe. just a thought.

It seems to be about the last 20% of the DOC that it doesn't plunge down to right away. So I'd say its not backlash/ hope

    Hi,
I had a similar problem, had to do with the Constant Velocit setting in Mach. The X or y was starting up befoe the Z finished up decelerating to keep the tool moving at a constant velocity in the turn. Turn on exact stop or play with the accelerations and CV settings to minimize the problem.

Here's what its set to right now

X and Y the same: 500 ipm and 111.7 Accel
    Z: 40 ipm and accel 2.5

I thought I had the Z faster but I was way off. Think I'll start there and bump it up some.

What's a good starting point to set the accel? about 40% of the velocity?

Set it to somewhere between 5 and 10.

Also, In general Config, set "Stop CV on angles" to 89 or 90.

Thanks! That seemed to take care of it
