I think the vibration might not be good for the ipod.
Has anyone ever tried mounting an engraver to a wood router and using it to engrave ipods? I was thinking being able to do pictures+ text on people's ipods (once I get my router built) would be pretty cool

that was my only thought, maybe I can pop the back cover off...?
Yeah, I'd definately take it apart first. Also, engraving might leave a sharp edge so you may have to polish it up afterwards. And make sure to test it out a bunch on scrap aluminum.
does anyone know how apple engraves them? do they use a laser?
I'm guessing they're molded?

Yup...they're lasered.

Aluminum is pretty soft...what about just using a drag engraver point? I have a metal "pen" that is essentially a carbide tip on a metal version of a wooden #2 pencil.
Placed in your Z axis, and simply "pressed" into the aluminum it should engrave the surface quite nicely, with no vibration or metal dust.
Just a thought...

sounds like a great idea, I'll have to try it on some scrap when i get my router built.
I think the drag engraver point is a great idea. It will not take much to etch the back of an iPod. Mine gets 'engraved' everytime I throw it in my bag :-)
