    Thumbs up Before I begin.

Hi guys, I have tried to digest as much as possible and being totally new to cnc I would like some pointers in the right direction on starting my own CNC build.

I would like to build a CNC machine from MDF that would have the capabilities of cutting
at least X-30 inches, Y-16 inches, Z-3-4 inches maximum.

I had in mind using 1 inch linear shafts with bearings or skate bearings for the X, 3/4 inch for the Y and 1/2 for the Z, also I plan on buying the Hobby CNC kit but don't know which size one to get so any help would be appreciated, also I have considered Xylotex as well.

Also when determining what size leadscrews to get what should I consider ? size, pitch of thread etc.

I plan on only cutting wood on this machine ie maple, mahogany, poplar, cherry etc to make decorative signs which I would like to incorporate 3D carvings and also would like to do inlays ie wood plastic shell etc. Also I would like the option to have speed when I need it and also accuracy when doing inlay stuff ie more delicate when speed is not essential.

I would like to start this project as soon as I can and would like to buy all the materials first so I have it all on hand so there is no guesswork when it comes to assembly.

Many thanks again for any help I'll take some pics as I'm building it so you can all see my progress.

I'm about to finish an mdf router table with similar cut dimensions. I'm using hp III Laserjet motors to drive it with 1/2 - 10 tpi ACME thread, and UHMW nuts. I'm also using the HobbyCNC 3 axis 4aupc driver board. I'll let you know what its doing and how it's performing in a couple of days...Welcome to the world of homecnc, and diy on a higher level.

Many thanks Lurch for your reply, yes please let me know how this goes as basically I am on a budget and buying the wrong stuff will only delay me making the machine and moving forward. I am really excited about starting this as its going to be a big challenge and a project I am longing to do. Kammo1
