I've seen people make sutff like that before. They cut a positive and a negative out of hardwood, then put a piece of thin gauge alum in the middle, then put it in a shop press.

A guy on the vectric forum carves a wood backer, then puts copper foil over it, raises the Z a little, and runs it with a round nose burnishing tool in the spindle.

It's possible without pos and negative.
I saw a movie on youtube. Grow-forming I think.
