Red face One Hand Scratches The Other

I, am a Cnc machinist that is trying to figure out how to build my very own cnc router. Sadly i dont have quite all of the knowledge and experince, nor do i have any one that is local to dallas Tx or surrounding areas .So if there is anyone out there that needs a few pieces made or fabricated i would be glad to build them for cost of metals and a little of ther time and experience. Message me through this service if we can work out a trade .

By the way i am trying to buil one with a 4'x8'x10 cutting window have had a lot of ideas but can find way to many flaws with most of them.

bean you must live here! Waxahachie??

There is a fellow you need to talk to there in Dallas. His name is Bob Campbell and I think his company is Campbell designs. Do a search and you should find him.

What exactly are you needing as for as knowledge goes? Machine design, electronics, controller or ??

There are a number of people on this board, who are in the Dallas area. I'm another one...I'm in Bonham, about 90 miles E-NE of Dallas.

Where is your trouble spot? Most people in this hobby can do the mechanicals, or the electronics, and need help with the "other one." Give us some more information, and we'll be able to help you out.

My main problem is deciding on an overall design ther are so many to choose from the oone that made the most sence is the cad cut but i am not that goog of a welder and am way to anal retintive to build anything that does not look and work as good as possible . i plan on cutting mdf and like materials with some hdpe on occasion and like i said earlier i would like a 4,8 cutting window. if some one can discuss the slide system with me i might build the frame out of 1x2solid 6061-t6 but i dont know which is best for my needs

Well welcome aboard even if you are from Texas! I'm a Razorback and you know what that means!

The first thing you probably need to do is determine the max amount you want to spend as this will determine the design by a considerable amount.

Are you more interested in speed or resolution? I have a machine that is exactly the size you are talking about. If you would like pics let me know.

I'm another from Texas. I live near Plano. Wow, I'll bet there are more Texans here than anybody else. I guess Texans are just naturally more cerebral. Perhaps we should start a Texas Only sub-board. It's not like the others can understand our spirited intellectual disquisitions anyway.

bean7795:
Check out my webpage. It hasn't been updated in a coon's age but in the next few days I'll be adding my completed Z-axis to it. Tomorrow I start the Y-axis and finish the X-axis sometime soon after. Perhaps T-slots will give you some ideas in any case.

samualt, uh....this is the only part I could understand "sub-"! Hey I'd better leave this along since I don't want this to degrade into joke telling!

Actually I have lived in Texas two different times......both as a youth. Jacinto City, burb of Houston way back in the early 60's and Mansfield even before that.

bean would you be interested in a ready built machine?

well samualt your right in Texans being a little bit different in ideas but we,d get a lot of people angery at us if we said we were smarter even though i think that were above average . i will spend what i can when i can im not in a big hurry but i need to quit thinking and do what i do best and get to building i plan on a frame that is similar to the one you have but im thinking 1'x2' solid rather than the T slot mainly because of the fact that i can get it at bulk cost when my boss orders a large enough quanity
it will cost me bout 467 for 10 bars of 12feet long material
but it did give me something to look at and desighn from but thk rails that long will cost a fortune so i am looking at all of the intelligent ideas from the other zoner's on linear slides that could be modified work at that length

5 Bears - CNC Bench Mill

Check out this site, while you're at it. While it doesn't discuss a huge mill like you're designing, it does detail the construction of a mill using aluminum extrusion, THK rails and slides, etc. Should be able to be scaled up, if you're fairly good with the mechanicals.

Say, have you decided what design you're going to use, yet? Moving table, or moving gantry? The moving table can be more rigid...but the moving gantry takes up half the space. Don'cha' love engineering tradeoffs?
