I am considering buying a linear rail + ballscrew combo set from chai at the linearmotionbearings ebay store. I am hesitant because the pack comes with three sets of supported rails and open linear bearings. This is perfect for the x-axis but I am worried about the y and z axis. As long as considerable moments are not applied, can these be mounted in any configurations? For the y-axis, the rails will be rotated 90 degrees around the longitudinal axis. The z-axis will be rotated 90 degrees around the rail axis and rotated another 90 degrees around the axis perpendicular to the rail. What are the limitations? Thanks for the input. | Hi You are missing the information on the resistance to tipping moments and you will have to ask for this information. The loads quoted are in line with the axis of the rails you need the ability to resist loads at right angles i.e. lifting the bearing off the rail. These rails are often used in pairs being placed back to back on opposite sides of the suport frame and pre loaded to give the desired resistance to tipping as well as improving basic rigidity. i.e. for a gantry four sets and this configuration will also be OK provided the pre load is greater than the twisting moment at the extremity of the mounted bearing on each rail. Hope this helps Pat Last edited by wildwestpat; 11-19-2009 at 03:22 PM. Reason: Correction |
