| I am about to set up my first high speed spindle and VFD and I need advice on line filters. 1. do I absolutly need one or should I wait to see if I have a problem. I have a 5hp colombo that will be driven with a 12hp VFD running on single phase. I have been looking at a line filter on ebay and wondering if it was a good deal and would work for my purposes. Item number: 380080621896 It's a 3 phase 250v unit rated at 150amps per phase, way over kill for my single phase 250v 35amp set up. But the price is only $50 for new surplus. If I split one line into two and ran my single phase into my VFD via this will I have a problem? Thanks I'm a noob when it comes to spindles |

| That type (RLC) is most often used on the input supply side of a VFD, If you want to use one at all, I usually go with the simple three phase choke or inductor only on the motor side. Al.

| Otherwise known as line reactors http://www.hammondpowersolutions.com...ne_reactor.php Most transformer manufacturers offer them. Al.

| As Anologman has just said if you use good shielded cable you don't need anything else & only ground the shield on the input end you will have no problems Do not split your single phase line power supply or you will no longer have a VFD drive

| It's my unterstanding that as long as your vfd is rated for twice the hp of the motor you are driving then you are able to run it off single phase, 5hp spindle + 10-12 hp VFD, as the vfd converts the ac to dc then makes its own three phase and since it's oversized I wont overload the units inputs. |

| In some cases, others do not de-rate the VFD on 1 phase. Also, if you run the wire in flex conduit etc, make sure you twist the conductors tightly together, this also reduces EMR. The ground wire would not be twisted with them, however. Al.

| Landmark you said in your first post that you want to split 1 line into 2 you can not do this You have to use (2) 120v lines to make 240v single phase for your input on your drive

| I took this to mean he intended running one side of the 240v 1 ph through two inputs as and the unit is being 3 phase, he was concerned about full populating the terminals? Al.

| I'm running a 5KW Colombo, smaller VFD, 50' run though e-chain along with shielded wires for steppers, limits etc. Spindle is wired with Home Depot's finest extension cord mtl. No shielding, no reactors, no problems. Ever. 6' X 20' cap Mechmate. Chuck |
