I was wondering if all you experienced guys could lend me some expertise? I have a DIY wood router that is using an old rotozip as a spindle and is cutting at about 70 ipm. I am using Sketchup, freemill and mach3 for software. Just starting to get into 3d files and have done a couple of test carvings. My question: What is the best machining procedure to get a smooth detailed finish? I have tried a 1/4" bit rough pass with .2" stepover in the x direction, followed by a 1/16" bit .02" stepover in both the y and x direction. Wondering if I should get a 20 deg vee bit or engravers bit or is there another trick to running these parts. Anyway, any feedback would be appreciated. |

Try a .005-.008 stepover.
