some design ideas

Hi guys

just playing around with some ideas for my next build. I like Joe's 4x4 and took some ideas from that, but I also wanted to try some of my own ideas.

The frame is made from 1 1/4 strut channel, the y supports are 3030 extrusions, and the gantry is mdf. The whole thing should have a working area of 4x4 and footprint of 5x6. The idea behind the mdf gantry is that I can just rout it out in 4 layers and glue the layers together for easy assembly. The hexagonal holes are to reduce weight while maintaining strength. The 3030 will be tapped and screws will hold it together with the mdf.

I'm having trouble designing with the v-groove wheels, since I haven't found any specs for the eccentric/concentric bushings. I need to know how far the wheels will stick out from the base with the bushings, but I'm a little fuzzy on how the mechanism works. How exactly does the eccentric bushing maintain the clamping force? Is it tapped on the inside?

thanks

Check out Stock Drive Products, they even have CAD model downloads for most of their products including V-Groove wheels and bushings.

Pics of something I've been working on. Wheels and busings from Stock Drive Products CAD library

Their price for bearings and bushings are high, got mine from VBX and will make my own bushings. Prices for belts and pulleys are good though.
