Thanks for your reply about the X axis sagging under heavy load. Do you think that would be mostly solved by going to a larger X axis rod like 25mm? Also, I assume you meant the X axis was sagging under load, but not the Y Axis?

thanks again
Don

Well if sag means the same as bend then that is what is happening but not from the static load (weight of gantry etc), its happening when the gantru and the Z axis are moving (rails and contruction are not siff enough) also when the router bit meets some resistance in going through the material, as I see its normal for unsupported rails . The thicker the better I would assume but the weight and price should be taken into consideration, as smaller diameter supported rails and open linear bearings are cheaper or the same price as unsported larger diameter linear bearings and shafts.

Smile Estimating and Plans

I wanted to congratulate you on an impressive build. I am trying to convince the wife to let me try my hand at building one but so far am not having much luck at even etimating what it would cost to build one like this. Also, is this built on any certain plans? I am still searching for clear building plans. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. Great job again!

You better post a lot of pictures of the Mechmate build.

Mechmate router, late review :)

Hello,
I have not been posting here for a while.
Things changed, and I must say its a doom or something. I see everyone here who builds his machine eventually builds another one and possibly LARGER one.
Small router is dismantled and the parts are likely to be put on a small mill I plan to add to my shop.

So it was same with me, the step forward was to build a Mechmate. With working area of 2800 x 2050 mm.
I am using a water cooled 2.2kW spindle with VFD, it really helps to have a good RPM control. Motors are NEMA34 ~6Nm and 5Amps with drives from Deitech 2M982 used on a 43V DC power supply.

Here are some photos of the finished build and some things I've done with it.

Mardus (MARic DUSan) is kind of a neighbor to me and his drives (Mardus Kreutz) helped a lot so his name appears on the machine. Drives were changed because I needed the bipolar torque, they were changed after 6 months of use so they stood quite well.

The plastic plates for reduction did not satisfy so I used the mechmate to make new ones out of some Alu.

Also spindle light:

Also made a pendant with Pokeys for Mach3.

And all sort of other things

No chatter at all, rack and pinion is a way to go for me.
