router hp vs spindle hp

i currently have loud porter cable router (1.5 hp)

and im considering replacing to a spindle.. found one that is 1kw power

is it comparable power or i should consider getting much larger ones..

what are the extra power required for? to keep up faster feedrate? my machine currently can do max 200 ipm for cutting..

Googled online and it showed it to be 1.34 hp. So it would be a little less. I see a lot of people going for 2.2kw spindles which would be close to 3hp. Might as well upgrade in power if you are going to get a new spindle. I'm still not ready to start looking at spindles so I can't really give you any real advice.

More power will maintain rpm better, and allow you to take deeper cuts. The 2.2Kw also have ER20 collets, which can hold larger tools.The price difference isn't that great, only about $60 more for the 2.2Kw.

Handheld router HP ratings aren't really comparable to the spindle kw ratings. Spindles will typically be more powerful when the ratings are similar.

Horsepower ratings on handheld routers are measured by peak current draw, whereas spindle hp ratings are measured by continuous current draw.

You are correct that higher hp spindles allow for faster feedrates. They're also more heavily built, adding spindle rigidity.

In other words horsepower ratings of handheld routers (which are essentially consumer items) are determined by the marketing department while the horsepower ratings on spindles (which are typically industrial items) are determined by the engineering department ;-)

Is there a rule of thumb to say what HP for a hand held router would equal to a spindle? What kind of difference are we talking about?

A 2.2Kw spindle should be more powerful than any handheld router.

I have used a 3.5 HP PC Router and a 2.2kw spindle. The spindle is quieter, more adjustable, and more powerful.

could someone Pls advise re good metal-working air cooled spindle supplier with good price for 1.5 -2 kW with ER32 - Arc Eurotrade, UK, seems to only have 1 kW w/ Er20 ..others seem too expensive.
