A VFD needs a start/stop signal and some sort of usually analog input to vary the spindle speed. My Hitachi sj200 can also be programed in a multi speed mode where based on several different relay type inputs, it willl give say 6 preprogramed speeds.
A g540 from gecko has the analog output needed to drive a vfd or you can get an analog "module" from several BOB suppliers.
