want to build a cnc router 3ft /5ft

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi
I am new to this forum.I have just started areo modeling and I am just loving it.At present all my cutting is done by hand which takes to much of my time so I used to send my plans out side and get it cut either on a cnc or a lazer machine but it stated to cost me more so there fore desided to make one cnc router machine.I mainly cut depron or balsa and sometimes aluminium ,more than flying I love building planes.
Ok now for the main part,i am not so technical so people on the forum it will be a little difficult for me to understand most of the technical terms you all use
i want to build a cnc router machine 3ft/5ft as most of my depron sheets r this big
i want to cut aleast 12 mm deep (1mm to 12mm)
i want to have a simple clamping system for my machine (please advice)
speed in not what i am looking for but accuracy is a must
user friendly software for drawing and controlling the machine
and the most important of all my budget 1200$
Learned and expert people on the forum pls help with this project and i am sure there r many other people on the forum who want to make a cnc machine but do not know from where to start
drawings, build photos, links, video, websites any thing will be of great help
you can also write to me on nikhil1300@gmail.com
few photo of what i am thinking of

Hi Nikhil

My advice would be to build something a bit smaller - say up to 3 feet and spend a lot of time researching what is required before you start your build. This forum is very good for information so search the FAQ carefully. What you don't understand, ask questions. This will save you a lot of time and money in the long run. Look at some of plans of available home-build cnc machines. I can recommend the Solsylva plans (David Steel) as they are well drawn and easy to understand. I am designing by machine based on the Solsylva 25"x25" plan by making it larger and in aluminium. Here in the UK the metal works out cheaper than wood!

Good Luck

Mike

Keep in mind while you are in the planning stage that even if you are not interested in speed you may need it to cut your foam sheets without melting them.

You can do it if you only plan on plastic you can cut come corners and save money to get under the $1200 mark.

For the Y and the Z use a single linear rail. You can go with a 15mm single cart for the Z and a two cart or single 15 or 20mm rail for the Y. Ebay is your friend here or go here.

http://www.automation-overstock.com/hiwintech.asp

Use 1/2" 2 start 5 TPI Acme thread rod from Roton and use their plastic nuts not the Dumpster nuts that many have used. I have three Dumpster nuts and all have backlash because they were made wrong.

For drivers go with two Gecko G251 and 1 G201. Use 2 382oz steppers for the Y and X and go for a single 902oz stepper for the X. This is the kelinginc part # KL34H295-43-8B

You could go for 2 belt drive for the X with a single 900 oz stepper and gear reduction powered by the G201 and the 900 oz stepper.

That leave the X rails which will need to be somewhat low cost so you will need to do some grove bearings and steel plate setup or f you want to spend more look here.

Hope that helps.

There is a whole section dedicated to them (Link). You can find lots of build logs and information there.

Mike,

I'm in the UK and looking to do the same, how big is the one your making?. Do you have a Router already to aid the build (might like to piggyback if poss).

Cheers

Ian
