Newbie Help on Stepper Motors

Hey guys, i posted on the controller cards portion of the forum, but no one seems to be able to help me.

Here is the stepper i have:

It has 5 wires that come out the back, and on the back of it there is an encoder mounted, which has no wires coming off of it at all.

I am wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to wire this up, since i see most controllers are for 4, 6, or 8 wires. I have not found a single one that is 5 wires.

Any one with help is appreciated, i want to get my machine moving this week, but without a controller its a little hard to do.

Thanks, Andy

Hi, I think you have an unipolar motor and can not be wired as bipolar because you have 5 wires. About the encoder I don't know anything about stepping motor using encoder.

thanks, im thinking that this motor is a total bust.

Anyone? I am thinking now it would be easier to return them and just get several Nema 23's and a controller card....

Buy me a Beer?

It's very weak at 66oz-in, and it's only 24 steps/revolution. Virtually all steppers used on CNC machines are 200 steps/rev.

Ok, thanks that's a big help. So i went and returned the 1 of 2 because i clipped the cable off the other one, i will find a use for it some other place. I guess i am going to shoot at building a larger table now, since i will be getting larger motors.

i guess maybe looking towards like a 160 oz -in motor or some where in there

My original table was only 24" x 18" wide, i think i will step up the size to something maybe 24" wide x 36" long? I was going to build a small one first to work out the bugs, but after several hours looking at others larger machines, i should build one that will suit many future projects to come.

Thanks guys

There's a good chance you'll end up heavily modifying or even building a second machine.

Depending on what drives you'll be using, you can get ~300oz motor from Keling for $40.

Ok, well the more i think about it, the more i am leaning on making a larger machine for my first one. I will look into the motors at kelling.

Thanks for the input! its greatly appreciated.

get the largest motor you can afford so if you decide to step up to even more bigger table you won't have to buy bigger ones.
I'm not really sure about this but I think Keling gets their motor from www.ms-motor.com which is from China you will see a BIG price different there. I bought my 1,699 oz and drivers from ms-motor and they run beautifully.

FWIW I skipped the "build a small machine first" and went right to building a machine that suited all my needs. I am very skilled at CAD, computers, machining, mechanics and electronics so all that helped. I built an all aluminum Data Cut machine 32x48.

Ya that is exactly what i am doing now. Headed to the Home Depot to get some supplies, hope to have the frame built by tomorrow night, ordered a ton of skate bearings from VXB for practically nothing, going to try the angle aluminum slides, if anyone has a suggestion as to what size aluminum it would be greatly appreciated!

I used 20x20x3 aluminium for the rails and 25x25x3 for the bearing carriers. These fit nicely with 22x8x7 skate bearings. If I do mine again, I will use a different setup for the bearing carriers so that the bearings are in line with each other and not staggered.
