Newby looking for project

I am totally new to CNC. Eventually I would like to build a machine that would allow me to cut gears and and such out of HDPE and UHMW sheets.

That is probably an ambitious first project. Can anyone recommend a good beginner project to learn the basics?

I don't think you have to look for a beginners project to build a DIY cnc to work up to. I'd suggest you just take month and start reading up. You can go with someone's plans, come up with your own, or buy a machine out right. There also are a few places that offer cnc kits where you don't have to actually machine anything. But I warn you, your probably going to end up building two to 3 machines. Don't say I didn't warn you.


I think the biggest hurdle is learning cad and cam. Everything else is just tweaking once you learn the basics.

FandZ speaks the truth I'm on my 3rd or 4th version of my second machine LOL

IMO your first machine should be something cheap and quick, so you start to learn the basics and get some hands on on the things - and use it to make parts for your second machine

Maybe search in your area for other DIY people too - people love to show off their machines

Speaking of that - does anyone live around the Tampa / Clearwater Florida areas?
