Please forgive me for posting here as I did ask this question in the "General Electronics" forum however I doubt that forum gets the same following this one does. Anyway here goes. From my surfing I have read that a Porter Cable router or Dremel uses a Universal Motor. As well I read a universal motor will run quieter, cooler from rectified AC line voltages(~90VDC). My goal is to use my new PC router with Mach3 and have the software control the RPM or the router. Does anyone know of a schematic or maybe a company that sells such a beast? Thanks for the help! |

| Hello... I think that router make minimal noise from AC. It's just a hum. The real noise come from collector/brushes and even more from cooling fan. That motor on DC should run (if dont have any internal speed ragulation) but you wil not hear any difference. In the other hands the heating will be lowered as AC doesn't make eddy current losses. But that's valid only for stator. Rotor on universal motor itself change polarity and have eddy current losses. As stator got 50(60) reversals per second the rotor get 240 reversals per second if run at 12000RPM. So the major heating element is rotor, and again you got almost no benifiet from runing on DC.
