Hanging gantry

I am looking at designing something a little different. Of all the designs I can find none have a gantry that rides rails that are above the axis, and having rods at the bottom. Is this something that has been tried and failed? I am attaching a poorly thrown together picture.

Yes it looks like a Torri on the end. Just for looks It is not part of the gantry.

[I can't see your picture (it seems to be stuck in the approval process) but the idea of having raised rails on the sides of the table is a good one. The Mechmate design is like that: www.mechmate.com

I'm not sure what you mean by "rods at the bottom", though. Generally, you want to preserve whatever clearance you've got for the workpiece, and carry your router as high as possible, as long as it can reach the table with a tool. What's a Torri?]

Wow where have I been? I know.. hunting for orphan photocopiers lol

The idea was to have a 3D rectangular frame and have the gantry "hang" off the top. Really it'd run on rails and my thought was to have supports that come off the sides of the gantry that's attached to rods that run along the side of the base.

A torii gate is the entrance to a Shinto or Buddhist shrine. It marks the transition from the chaotic world to the sacred. Or as Wiki put it:

"Torii mark the transition from the sacred (the shrine) to the profane (the normal world) (see Sacred-profane dichotomy). Inari shrines typically have many torii. A person who has been successful in business often donates a torii in gratitude. The Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto has thousands of such torii."

Oh the mechmate, yes that is close and better then what I was thinking. The more I read and see, it looks like my design ideas are unnecessarily complicated lol ... go figure!
