My diy homemade router

Hello out there!

I´m new at this forum and i want to show you some pics of my woodworking-machine build.

The first pics were elder, cause the last few weeks in have changed the acme screws and nuts against a belt-drive operated one.

Much more silence an speed. about 12m/min.(480 inch)
Working simensions are X1000, Y600, Z115mm

The spindle was a selfmade one, powered by a 200W DC-Brushmotor.
Enough power for plywood, plastics. Makes 15000RPM.
Today i´ve made a cover for it. Sorry, no pics.

For milling some little figures an statues i´ve made a small 4th axis with 50mm chuck. It´s not finished now, but works.

Improvement never ends, every day a little bit more.

Hope you like it!

Hi,

the spindle motor wasn´t build to work in metals, but i´ve chosen brass.

Endmill 6mm
S12000
F300
Stepdown 1mm

and in beechwood

F12000
F1000
Stepdown 5mm

Exakt positioning within 150mm (measured with a digi-caliper), measuring with a yardstick from 0 to 1000mm was optical good too. No backlash, no oil or grease necessarily.
I´m working mostly with foam, so one drop of it ruins my workpieces.

Hi - nice project.

I am also working on a belt drive system and I hope you don't mind a few questions about the belt drive system you chose.

a) Belt selection
- I am still trying to decide on the belt speficiation.
- So far, I am thinking of AT -10 type belt x 25mm wide.
- It looks like you are using HTD tooth profile - could you tell us how wide ?

b) Pulley and shafts
- It looks like perhaps a 12mm diameter shaft with 50 mm dia pulleys ?

Do you see any flexing or are you pretty happy with the sizing ?

Thank you,

HarryN

Nice work over all, very clean, and well executed. I especially like your belt driven system. Don't suppose you have any video up anywhere? I'd love to see those belts in action.

@Harry

I´m using HTD belts an pulleys with 5mm teeth and 15mm wide.
Better not to use T or AT-Profile, cause they´ve got a little bit backlash.

I had these pulleys at home, so i take it.
There is a little flexing, but not so much that you cant use the machine für aluminium and brass.

Notice: the machine was made for wood and plastics. I´m mostly using end- and ballmills dia 1.5-6mm and some v-bits for carving.

The shafts are 10mm diameter, made from a brass-rail. (was lying there, anywhere).

The pulleys for the gears are 16/40 teeth, pulley on the belt with 20 teeth.
One turn of the belt-pulley is 100mm.
the steppers are running in 1/40 step = 0.005mm/step.
Very silent, sounds like a servomotor.

@FandZ

I´ve only got this one, first test of the rebuild axis.

Perhaps today i make another one.
I´m coming soon from work, its 7:26am, going to bed.

Wink

Today i have finished the cover for the spindle motor, on top with a little exhaust for cooling. At the back of the plastic pipe is a small slot for the outtaking air.

A new video for showing the rapid moves comes later.

Here´s the new video, you can hear the different noises between the beltdrive-axis in 1/40 steps and the z-axis in 1/10 step.

Thanks for the video. That's a great build. Your speed seems perfect for the size.
