May be a stupid question but I work in the automation industry and have yet to see a spring loaded pinion running on a rack. I find many machines on here that have this feature?? Why do people do this on DIY machines? Is it because of alignment issues? Is it a protection device? Why not just have an adjustment for the gear pre-load?

in my case it is because of alignment issues))
+ you get no backlash
+ less load on stepper -> you can go faster and more stable at high speed.

Even though the spring is probably not the best method, it's the easiest.

serious routers i think dont use springs, but for hobby it is ok!

According to me,not only the alignment problem but also to self compensating the wear.But i think that during heavy load pinion may loose some steps.
