Stepper Motors

Hey everybody!

I've gotten around to hooking some motors that I had up to my machine and I can only get about 35 IPM from them - so I'm guessing I need some beefier motors... So should I be looking like "More Oz the better" or are the voltage and amps, etc all factored into speed and torque (which I'm sure they are)

I have the hobby CNC pro board and a 24vdc / 6amp powersupply

Thanks for any "hunting" tips!

Jamie

I don't really know on some of them - they were recovered from some old printers so I really don't have any info on them (you can see one in the picture I posted - that's about all the info I got)

So I'm really looking to buy some motors that I know will be good enough

What are you looking to be cutting with your machine?

What are you using as lead screws and what are their pitch/inch?

How fast do you want your rapid moves?

I hope you don't mind me saying but your machine frame looks from the picture to be very light. You may need to look in to that if your going to be cutting anything that need much cutting force.
If you need to beef it up you will have more weight to push around and so need more power from your steppers.

Do some more searching in the stepper motor forum and get more familiar with how they work.

With out more information all I can say is 250ish oz in might be enough then again you may need more.

Thanks John - I have a machine now that I built a year ago (one of the MDF ones) so I'm familiar with how everything works - so I was looking for suggestions on what size stepper to get that might be appropriate - plus I wasn't sure if I can look at just the ounces and "bigger is better"

I'll be cutting mostly woods - guitar bodies, engraving signs, and such... since I built my own aluminum foundry I've kinda taken "milling aluminum" off my list - although I might throw a piece or two on there to maybe flycut the surface, but that's not a huge requirement - but I'm pretty sure I'll need to go faster than 30ipm at some point - plus I don't want to constantly be working at the "top end" of these little steppers

I'm using Acme 1/2 10 1 start screws

I was actually thinking of going a size bigger - like the 425oz - or I can even step into the Nema 32 size since I make my own mounts I can just remake them... Do you think it would be worth the investment to go that route?

I would not go with Nema 32 and bigger is not always better?

Its not just about oz in as voltage and other factors can effect your speed in a big way.

The quick answer looking at your machine and from your posts I would agree 425 oz in will be a better choice especially if the price is not a problem and they suit your driver board.

It's really up to you how you go but if you want to do the job right a lot more information is required to size your steppers.

Here's a good thread to read that may help.

Calculating What kind of power i need ????

Lots of others out there
